This photograph of the Cape Town docks shows the gradual transition from sail to steam.
I cannot be sure when it was taken, but I would guess it was in the period 1890 – 1910.
This was the period that saw very rapid growth in the city, as goods poured into it to provide the materials required for the Anglo-Boer war (1899 – 1902).
