According to media reports, the Eritrean ambassador to Switzerland has resigned and is hoping for asylum in Switzerland. The local authorities are not commenting on the matter.Published: September 5, 2023

The ambassador’s downfall is said to have been the fact that he reported to the regime under President Isaias Afwerki about machinations in Switzerland.

The rumors that have been making the rounds on social networks for a few days are apparently true, reports the “Aargauer Zeitung” . However, the ambassador’s disappearance had nothing to do with the weekend riots in Zurich, the newspaper writes.

Rather, the Eritrean representative is said to have uncovered dirty dealings in his embassy: An insider tells the “Aargauer Zeitung” that Osman discovered that some people had hidden money at the embassy. It was about money for refugees so that they could apply for social assistance in Switzerland.

The ambassador betrayed the masterminds behind these deals to the regime back home in Eritrea. “Several very influential men have been imprisoned because of him – now they and their backers are looking for him,” the anonymous source told the newspaper. The “Aargauer Zeitung” and friends of the diplomat have no longer been able to reach him for days. 

Neither the State Secretariat for Migration nor the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs comment on the rumors or want to confirm receipt of the asylum application. This is not possible due to data and privacy protection, she says.
