Cathy Watson with the EPLF 1985

By Cathy Watson

This is July 1985 and I’m the small muzungu in specs in the second row.

Introduced to the EPLF by Martin Plaut and his wife Gill Black, I was attending a health meeting in the liberated zone . We entered via Port Sudan. Most of the people in the photo are nurses, doctors, pharmacists.

After the meeting was over, I ended up in the town of Barentu, which had just fallen to the EPLF. I wrote it up in The Guardian.
