This is July 1985 and I’m the small muzungu in specs in the second row.
Introduced to the EPLF by Martin Plaut and his wife Gill Black, I was attending a health meeting in the liberated zone . We entered via Port Sudan. Most of the people in the photo are nurses, doctors, pharmacists.
After the meeting was over, I ended up in the town of Barentu, which had just fallen to the EPLF. I wrote it up in The Guardian.
