This report is – truly – difficult reading. I reported from Africa for the BBC for nearly 30 years. I saw atrocities of all kinds. I wrote a book about Ethiopia’s war against Tigray with Sarah Vaughan. But the detail in this report, particularly against women, is horrifying. I could hardly bear going through it. The photographs are so graphic they are difficult to look at. Yet, we must.

The women were – by far – the largest number of victims. But men and boys were also grossly abused. This is just one example of what the interviews revealed.

Though the young men told the soldiers that they were civilians, they continued torturing them. Later, they started gang raping them all anally and orally in just one room. They repeatedly raped and tortured them from around 10:30 am to 5:00 pm.

And so the evidence mounts up…
