The Eritrean government has released 13 people who have been held in Mysore military prison for nearly 18 years, relatives of prisoners told the BBC.

The prisoners, including traders, policemen and professionals, were reunited with their families on December.

The prisoners have been in the prison since October 2007 after an assassination attempt on Eritrean Internal Security Chief Brigadier General Simon Gebredingid following the case of two businessmen, said an unnamed prisoner.

He adds that an estimated 30 people were arrested in connection with the case, such as Haleka Berhe of Adiyacob (later deceased) who were released from time to time, but 20 people remain in custody.

They include former Olympic cyclist and businessman Zeragabir Gebrehiwot, prominent businessmen Tesfalem Mengsteab and Bekure Mebrahtu, and two brothers, Engineer David Habtemariam and Geometer Matthews Habtemariam.

In addition, six members of the Eritrean police: former crime prevention chief Colonel Asmerom Gebreweldi, former crime investigation chief Colonel Goitoom Gebreselassie (son of Bekit), former finance and administration chief Colonel Solomon Berhane, former surveillance chief Major Frezgi Hibtezgi Captain Tekiah Gebrehiwot, senior investigators Lt. Col. Isaiah Joseph and Major Tesfaldet Joshua.

Major Goitoom Araya (son of Bini), a former member of the Internal Security, is also among those who have left. Colonel Goitoom was released in 2011 with five others, but returned more than three years later.

Colonel Gebretinsae Gebremichael (son of Gere), who was arrested with them, reportedly died while in prison (2011).
