The Swedish government is introducing a bill to make it possible to revoke acquired citizenship
In the bill, the government proposes amendments to the provisions of the Instrument of Government on fundamental rights and freedoms.
It is proposed that regulations be issued to the effect that Swedish citizenship shall be revoked from those who are citizens of another state and who have acquired citizenship through incorrect or misleading information or through other improper conduct, or who have been convicted of crimes that seriously harm Sweden’s vital interests.
Organized crime is a systemic threat. The constitutional protection of freedom of association currently prevents comprehensive criminalization of participation in criminal organizations. The Government therefore proposes that freedom of association should be restricted in the case of associations that engage in serious crime in order to achieve financial gain or other improper advantage. The amendment to the law is proposed to enter into force on 1 January 2027.
