Some aspects of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s vision for his country are well known: as others have pointed out, he is a populist, who has little time for carefully worked out ideologies.
Alex de Waal, comparing Abiy’s book Medemer with the approach followed by the Tigray Peoples’ Liberation Front (TPLF) leadership, wrote:
“One of the attractions of Abiy’s philosophy of Medemer (‘synergy’ or ‘coming together’) is precisely that it lacks the intellectual rigor characteristic of the TPLF leadership and their fellow revolutionaries.
Rather, the Abiy leadership relies on a brand of evangelical Christianity that does not have deep roots in Ethiopian history. It is an American import that promises prosperity to its follows.
None of this has deterred the Prime Minister, or his vision of Rising Ethiopia.
But as the investigations into the atrocities committed by Ethiopian forces during the Tigray war are uncovered the hate speech that underpins the war needs to be highlighted.
A report by the UN Human Rights Commission and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission is due out on 1st November.
It needs to investigate the ideological underpinnings of these human rights abuses.
Prime Minister Abiy’s ideologues
Among those behind this is Deacon Daniel Kibret. An adviser to the Prime Minister, he was also appointed as a director of the board of the state-owned Ethiopian Press Agency, despite the reservations of many Members of Parliament.
In the past Daniel Kibret has attacked the role if Muslims in Ethiopia – complaining of the number of mosques that have been built and their role in business.
But it is his attacks on Tigrayans that are particularly concerning in the context of the current war.

He recently described them as the creation of Satan, who should be removed from history.

Daniel Kibret suggested that Tigrayans were monsters, and should be “the last of their kind.”
As has been pointed out, this is not the first time Daniel Kibret made claims of this kind.
He declared that Ethiopia was at its best when the war on Tigray was raging and thousands of civilians were being massacred by Eritrean mercenaries and Amhara militia during a total communication blackout.
It is not difficult to see where this ends…it was the hate speech by the Hutu extremists, who called the Tutsi “cockroaches” that resulted in the Rwandan genocide.
In 2016 the Rwandan who promoted these toxic terms was jailed for life.
It is important that the report on human rights abuses during the Tigray war does not flinch from naming those responsible for stirring up this hatred.
Thank you Martin for deep thought of Abiy Ahmed’s vision and ideology. Ethiopia is heading to very dark path of no return as one united country.
The genocide in Tigray is the catalyst to fragment Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government and Amhara elites are destroying the social fabric of the Ethiopian society to live in harmony using lies, disinformation, scapegoating and blackmailing the people of Tigray.
Does anyone heard of or witness to massacre, rape, loot and destroy properties by inviting a foreign army? Abiy Ahmed has invited the Eritrean Army to kill and rape Ethiopian citizens.
Hate speeches are becoming the Ethiopian government official policy to ignite inter-ethnic violence in Ethiopia.
Abiy Ahmed is leading his advisors, ministers and his followers to demonise, discriminate, arrest, kill and rape based on their Tigrayan identity. It is sad that Abiy Ahmed is dragging the country to irreconcilable situation. The bottom line, Tigrayans, Agew, Kemant, Gumuz and other minority will not live with savages and rapists anymore.
Well as a fellow Eritrean following the current development in Ethiopia, your interpretation of what has been said by Daniel kibret are utterly false! You are quoting a statement out of contest. He was referring to TPLF not Tigrians! Stop misleading people. People like you who portrait themselves as human rights advocates are the soul problem of the world!
Sole not soul
the USA , EU and UN should dethrone, and remove Abiy from power and deliver food to the people in need by any means forcefully instead of appeasing a single party known to the world for its genocidal actions.
How could USA force people of Tigray and Oromo to sit with genociders and make peace? Why is USA not removing Abiy that was installed by the help of US former leadership?
if they believe that genocide is comitted in ethiopia why do they let Abiy to stay in power and discuss with affected people ?It is fishy ?
An all-out effor to prolong a single man’s power at the expense of millions starving to death ???
Hmm, I smell a rat!

If UN authorities want to help the people of Tigray, Oromia and those who live in Wollo, we kindly request them to use their airplanes that belong to WFP or other .
Appeasing Abiy and his party for teh past 9 months mean something fishy is underway .
Its amazes me when a pearson who run away from Eritrea dictator defending another dictator in Ethiopia.. what a shame, most of Eritreans defend the monster in Asmara and Addis.
This website is an echo chamber of TPLF…..Martin, I read your book about Eritrea and I agree with most of the points you wrote….But when it comes to TPLF you are completely biased…I am not sure what is the source of this bias ….You Could be a paid Consultant of the TPLF….There is no difference between EPLF and TPLF….You seem. to be critical of the Isaias government which I agree with, but you seem to be blindly loyal to the TPLF…..There is a difference between the Tigray people and the TPLF….How much you are being paid? you need to disclose your conflict of interest. There is nothing wrong being a consultant, but you need to inform your loyal readers.
I have never been paid by anyone to write any comments. I was paid by the BBC until I retired. Since then I have only received (very modest) sums for the books I have written. Nothing more.
Bless you, Mr. Martin Plaut, for your voice for the voiceless of Africa, to the people of Tigray. As we have merely witnessed for the last three terrible years, Abiy’s corrupt administration and its governing style, an essential character, is pathological.
Daniel Kibret’s consistent characterization and his genocidal rhetoric is an example of the deliberate intent to what extent they are ready to wipe up Tigran’s from the earth.
To undoubtedly gain political backing from his unimaginative supporters, Abiy employs various kinds of fiction now and then.
The name-calling and fabricating unconfirmed lies and producing unsupported theatrical documentary dramas continue as an effective means to attack his considerable opposition and Tigran’s.
He broadcast the deliberate lies and hate speech by all governmental, nongovernmental stream media, and tubers who blindly supported the brutal regime over the candid people of Tigray.
The intended purpose of the corrupt government is to dehumanize, defame, and dismantle the innocent Tegarus from the rest of the Ethiopians.
The fascist regime operates a deliberate lie and hates speech as a political system and its distinctive style. Abiy utilizes these principles to show how Abiy and his vicious circle have nobility leaders and magnifying their image in the unconscious minds of Ethiopians and the world. They perform everything with their temporary power to destroy Tegaru. However, Abiy and his companions, missing a big picture of Tegarus history, culture, integrity, and how to overcome all obstacles to tackle and heighten the winning atmosphere to their hands. The reality on the ground proves that. Can Abiy and his companion know where TDF is exactly presently? I don’t think so, because they are under pathological fear. Tigray is winning!
