The Asmara Mining Share Company (AMSC) made the first shipment of direct shipping ore (DSO) from its Debarwa deposit in Eritrea.

China’s Sichuan Road & Bridge Mining Investment Development Corp. is gearing up to kick off copper, zinc, gold and silver production in Eritrea next year. August 24, 2018

The “Asmara Project” hosts four known deposits at Debarwa, Adi Nefas, Gupo, and Emba Derho.

In Phase 1A, the high-grade copper will be mined from the Debarwa deposit by open-pit methods, crushed and loaded into containers, and transported 120 km to the port facility at Massawa for shipping and sale to a smelter in China (a process known as direct shipping ore or “DSO”).

Please keep in mind these key points:

1) DSO is significantly more cost-effective than building a $400 million processing plant like that of Bisha.

2) The Debarwa deposit is nearly one-eighth the size of the Bisha deposit. So no point to build on in Debarwa.

3) However, there is a plan to establish a central processing plant in Emba Derho (Phase II) once sufficient revenue has been generated from Debarwa deposit (Phase I).

Note: This project has been on the cards since at least 2015.
