Towards the end of my career with the BBC I had the opportunity of visiting a community living in the far North of South Sudan, close to the borders of Chad and Sudan. They are wonderful people, mostly living off their cattle in an area that frequently floods. The cattle walk daily into the swamps, with birds of every kind dropping out of the sky to share their pasture. Self-reliant, warm and resolute, I had a marvelous time with them: a real privilege to meet them.

Dear Martin Thank you for today’s evocative pictures. I read your letters every day and appreciate your reports on the area, sad though they are. I worked in South Sudan / East Africa for many years and, like you, appreciate the wonderful people there. I was part of the Catholic Church’s efforts to develop education before and after South Sudan’s independence. Sincerely Maureen Limer Sister of Mercy
Dear Sister Maureen, Many thanks for your kind comment. I share what I believe to be true but of course I make mistakes. I send you warm greetings. Martin
