I bought this photograph.
The date is suggested as 1946. The writing in Tigrigna on the wall says Muslim Youth Association – which is repeated in Italian.
I am only assuming that the location is Cairo: that is what the vendor suggested.
On the reverse is writing, but I am having difficulty working out what it says.
Can anyone identify who these people are, or what the club did?
Martin
Dear Martin,
this photo shows the Muslim Youth Club in Asmara, which was the youth organisation of the Muslim League back in that time. Unfortunately, I don’t know the people on the photo, but maybe the writing on the backside, which refers to three men, Yassin Hassan Othman, Mussa Idriss Mussa, and Abdulahi …… came from Senafe to a meeting at the club and wrote their names there as memory. The club was an active youth organisation established as a reaction to the Unionist Party’ s youth organisation, and it mobilised the Muslim youth for the case of Eritrea’s independence.

what I would like to know is the motive for posting the picture, what does he want as to think from the picture
does he have any intention behind it .
This is how I would read some of the names on the reverse writing in order:
Yasin Hasen Usman
Mussa Idriss Mussa
Abbdullahi…….Zeinulabodi(?)
Senafe ….1946
From the Arabic text in the front picture the location is in Asmara.
From the back of the picture the date is 27 June 1946 ( 27 Rajab 1365).
I can also read Yasin Hassen Iman, Musa Idris Musa, Abdulahi butcouldn’t read his fathers name.
As per written in Arabic, it’s in Asmara not in Cairo
The location is almost certainly Asmara.
– The Muslim Youth Association was the youth arm of the Eritrean Muslim League, which had chapters (and clubs) in Asmara and other major towns
– There is no record of Eritrean muslim youth club in Cairo in that period (or even afterwards). What existed in Cairo was (still is) an Eritrean Students club
– The attire of the men in the picture is typically that of Eritrean muslim men in Asmara and other Highlands areas in that period, and unlike that associated with Eritrean imigrants in Egypt at the time, which is well documented (pictorially).
– The architecture is typical Asmara architecture of the so-called native quarters
This isn’t Cairo . This was a youth club in Asmara in the 40’s as clearly shown in the Arabic translation of the club name.
I sincerely believe that the location of the Club is back the Grand Moske of Asmara “Chulepha Al Rashidun”. The name of Club in the beginning was “Nadi Al’ Shebab” later in 1954 was renamed to “Nadi Al’ Jeberti”.

I believe this is young Muslim community club in Asmara as it estates in Arabic, perhaps this pic, was taken on the occasion of establishing a new club, the date of the pic.1946 precedes the establishment of the Muslim League[Alrabita ]which was established early 1947,it is quite of interest to me on personal level,as my father was involved with the Youth branch of the Muslim League, and our home was near the main Mosque in Asmara,I believe not far from this club, couldn’t recognize any one ,thanks for posting
