Somaliland miningSomaliland has been pressing for international recognition of its de-facto independence for years.

This week it will be hosting a conference to try to win investment in its mining sector.

Not surprisingly this is taking place in Dubai – home to DP World – which is to develop Berbera.

Somalia is likely to be furious.

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to bring your attention to the Somaliland Mining and Infrastructure Investment Forum (SMIIF) scheduled for the 23rd July at the Grand Hyatt Dubai.

Somaliland’s story is unfamiliar to many in the global investment community. Often confused with our war-torn neighbour to the south, Somalia. By contrast, Somaliland is highly stable and democratic.

Somaliland hit the international business pages recently thanks to a $442m landmark investment from DP World — the largest in our history — which will see the Port of Berbera (set in a bustling coastal town, northeast of Hargeisa, Somaliland’s capital) redeveloped and expanded to provide an alternative shipping and trading hub in the Horn.

Kurdistan-focused Genel Energy (GENL.L) aims to start drilling in Somaliland next year, Chief Executive Murat Ozgul said, as the group reported 2017 results broadly in line with expectations.

“For the long term, I really like (our) Somaliland exploration assets. It’s giving me a sense of Kurdistan 15 years ago,” Ozgul said in a phone interview. “In 2019 we may be (starting) the drilling activities.

DP World and Genel Energy join an increasing number of multinational companies viewing Somaliland as a secure and stable investment opportunity.

Themed “Mobilizing Institutional Capital For Somaliland’s Infrastructure”, the 2018 SMIIF is designed to create an opportunity for senior policy makers to interact with potential investors, fund managers and delivery partners in a number of critical infrastructure sectors. Intending to initiate the process of establishing the mutual understanding and trust, vital in creating the environment for investing and project delivery.

Discussion leaders at the 2018 SMIIF include –

  • H.E Mussa Bihi Abdi, The President, Republic of Somaliland
  • H.E. Jama Haji Mohamoud Ega, Minister of Energy and Minerals, Republic of Somaliland
