
This shows Indian Sikhs manning a 3.7 inch Mountain Howitzer Artillery as the British led troops liberated the Eritrean port of Massawa, 9th April 1941.
Many of the Indians died in the attack and are buried in Keren at the Commonwealth War Graves site. I have visited – years ago – and it was immaculately maintained. Here is the record of one of the 288 who laid down their lives (full list below.)

They lie alongside Sudanese, British and other casualties. The graveyard is a most moving place to visit.
