An Ethiopian officer swears an oath of allegiance on the eve of the Italian invasion of the country in 1935. Ahead lay terrible battles and many would lose their lives, while the Emperor would be forced to flee into exile.
This is the caption from the photograph:
“Taking the oath in Abyssinia. The officer’s right hand is raised, while his left had touches the Colours. the oath is as follows: ‘I swear as a soldier of my emperor, Haile Selassie, to remain for ever true to him and to Ethiopia. Never to give way in battle, and in war to die for Emperor and country only whilst attacking.'”
A sad photograph really. Considering what lay in store.
This is a history of valor and patriotism the TPLF has been trying to discredit and dishonor … Fortunately, I must add, in vain!
