With the Olympics now over it is possible to look back at Rio and see how Africa has come on since the London games four years ago.
And the result is positive! A total of 45 medals, compared with 31 in London.
The same number of gold medals – 10 – but silver and bronze were up.
So well done all the African athletes!
Nigeria made it into the medals table, but really, for such a great nation, why just one bronze?
Individual achievements
Who can forget Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge winning the marathon?
Or South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk’s record breaking achievement in the 400 metres or Caster Semenya’s win in the 800 metres?
And how amazing for Cheick Cisse of Ivory Coast to take Ivory Coast’s first gold medal by winning in the men’s Taekwondo 80-kg!
Finally, Feyisa Lilesa’s decision to cross his arms in protest at the oppression of his Oromo people was an astonishing act of bravery.
It reminded us of how the Olympics have previously been used to register resistance.
This included the 1968 black power salutes by US athletes.
Feyisa’s courage could cost him dearly when he goes home and we will all need to watch what happens.

Nigeria may redeem themselves a little at the paralympics. Their weightlifters did very well last time.
Terrific piece on Rio and Africa- really good to be able to be so positive. Glenys
