The genocidal and dictatorial regime of the Prosperity Party, by transitioning the comprehensive siege and encirclement, as well as the attacks it has been carrying out via drones and its emissaries to greater heights, has today, August 1, 2026, launched an open battle [attack] in the direction of Shererina in West Tigray Zone since this morning. National Regional Government of Tigray, August 1, 2026

The tension in the Horn of Africa, and in Tigray in particular, has been coming to a head for some time.

Kjetil Tronvoll, a regional specialist at Oslo New University College, warned: “This is a clear military escalation and the most serious confrontation in northern Ethiopia for some time.” “At this stage, the attack could represent either the start of a wider military campaign or a coercive show of force intended to deter the Tigrayan side from further escalation,” he told AFP.

The background can be found in this excellent analysis. Today it appears that conflict has erupted close to the border with Sudan, at a place called Shererina. The statements below are verbatim.

“Members of Tigay forces: The situation has begun – for our government, people and army. Members of 22nd Army, wherever you are, everyone of you, before the time passes, should mobilize! I would like to make a call. To all members of the Tigray forces and particularly members of the 22nd Army: mobilize!”

Gebregziabher Gebreselama, Commander of the 22nd Army.

There are reports of fighting in a place called Shererina on the Ethiopia – Sudanese border between Sudan and Welkait.

Statement from the Government of Tigray on the Current Situation

The genocidal and dictatorial regime of the Prosperity Party, by transitioning the comprehensive siege and encirclement, as well as the attacks it has been carrying out via drones and its emissaries to greater heights, has today, August 1, 2026, launched an open battle [attack] in the direction of Shererina in West Tigray Zone since this morning.

This regime, since coming to power, has declared genocide against the people of Tigray and has been committing, and continues to commit, all kinds of international crimes. Even after the signing of the Pretoria Agreement, driven by its longstanding desire to subjugate and unravel the Tigray people, it has been carrying out various plots, siege and encirclement, as well as military mobilizations, after which it has taken the initiative to invade Tigray and displace the people once again, and has waged a battle against us.

Therefore, we call upon the people of Tigray living at home and abroad, all Tigrayan security forces, Tigrayan national forces and fighters, Tigrayan civil societies, Tigrayan religious institutions, and other concerned bodies to declare, “National destruction, an absurdity!” and ready yourselves once again to perform a historic feat in the just struggle waged to ensure our national existence.

We inform you that developments regarding the re-invasion and destruction that have begun will be provided by the relevant authorities from time to time. We would like to use this opportunity to urge our people to take proper precautions. The international community should be aware of the consequences of the war waged by the genocidal and dictatorial regime on the region.

Statement by the Secretary-General of the TPLF

This statement followed an earlier speech by the Secretary-General of the TPLF, Fetlework Gebregziabher, (nom-de-guerre Monjorino) who called on Tigrayan youth to mobilise to face the current threat from the Ethiopian government.

Dimtsi Weyane, 24/7/2026

She went on to explain that Tigrayans were not alone.

“Since the Prosperity regime has mobilized to crush many of the demands raised across Ethiopia, numerous armed movements have emerged that are fighting against the Prosperity regime and regard it as an existential threat.”

She then went on to explain the nature of the new alliance, which has come together.

Through our wise struggle over the past few years, all the forces that the Prosperity regime had mobilized against us have now changed their alignment. All those who once stood against us are now aligned against the Prosperity regime. Today, we are not alone in our struggle against the Prosperity regime.

There are forces fighting against it because of their own existential concerns. There are the Amhara, Qimant, Afar, Agaw, Oromo, Benishangul-Gumuz, Somali, and many other armed groups that want to cooperate with us in their struggle against it. We have forged alliances with these forces, and a situation has emerged in which we can struggle together against our common enemy. This is an alliance formed for the survival of the people of Tigray.

The Ethiopian federal government has not immediately responded to the allegations.

The latest claims come amid a broader deterioration in relations between Addis Abeba and Tigray authorities. On 7 July, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed alleged that Sudan, the TPLF, and Eritrea are collaborating against Ethiopia, drawing parallels with the alliance that contributed to the overthrow of the Derg regime while suggesting that unnamed external actors are also involved.

Tigray officials have responded declaring that the 2022 Pretoria Agreement has “collapsed,” accusing the federal government of failing to implement key provisions of the accord and preparing for renewed hostilities.
