At a packed meeting in a church near Euston Station, the local Labour Party met last night to select its candidate to succeed Keir Starmer as our Member of Parliament.

Of course, there will be an election in October for members of the public to make the decision, but Sagal will be our candidate. She gave a really rousing speech about how Camden had made her the woman she has become, after arriving in London as a Somali refugee.

We heard from two other candidates, both of whom are Camden Councillors, working with Sagal, who is currently Council leader.

After the votes were counted, it was time to unite behind her, and show Sagal the support she will be getting from us.

Then it was off to celebrate in the Grafton pub, our traditional haunt. Sagal always comes with us, but as a Muslim, she never drinks alcohol. Given the victory, there was really no need!

Then, early this morning, it was out at local stations, letting the Camden public hear the good news!

If elected by the people of Holborn & St Pancras, Sagal will have big shoes to fill. Keir Starmer has been our Member of Parliament for the past decade, rising to become our Prime Minister. Having known Sagal for years, I am sure she’s up to the job!

And – not to be overlooked – she would be the first British Somali woman ever to be elected to the British Parliament!
