The Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization (RSADO) issues this urgent appeal to the international community regarding the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian, health, and living conditions of the Red Sea Afar communities in Eritrea’s coastal areas and islands.

Residents are enduring severe drought, acute food and water shortages, the systematic erosion of traditional livelihoods (particularly marine fishing), and a complete breakdown of basic health services and essential supplies. These dire conditions are compounded by prolonged isolation, severe restrictions on freedom of movement, and strict bans on independent reporting, policies that the Eritrean regime has enforced for nearly three decades.

The situation facing the Afar communities along the Red Sea coast and islands must not be treated as a temporary hardship. It demands immediate, unhindered, and independent international action to establish the facts, assess population needs, and prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.

1. Severe Drought, Food Insecurity, and Collapsing Health Infrastructure

Residents across coastal villages, towns, and islands are experiencing catastrophic living conditions. Shortages of food and potable water have reached critical levels, alongside the systematic destruction of traditional livelihoods such as fishing. These hardships are further exacerbated by:

  • Critically limited medical capacity, acute shortages of essential medicines, and inadequate medical equipment.
  • The inability of local health facilities to provide care for vulnerable populations, including infants, pregnant women, the elderly, and the sick.
  • Geographic isolation, which prevents residents in remote areas from accessing emergency medical care or basic life-saving supplies.

Without an immediate, independent humanitarian assessment and prompt relief operations, malnutrition and disease will escalate, leading to preventable loss of life and threatening the long-term survival of the Afar on their ancestral lands.

2. State-Imposed Restrictions, Militarization, and Forced Displacement

RSADO stresses that this humanitarian crisis is inseparable from decades of oppressive state policies, deliberate political and economic marginalization, severe constraints on civil liberties, and forced military mobilization.

These oppressive conditions have forced large numbers of young people to flee their ancestral homes in search of safety, freedom, and survival. This exodus has led to:

  • The painful separation of families.
  • The depletion of the productive workforce required to sustain local communities.
  • Disproportionate burdens placed on women, children, and elderly residents left behind.

Furthermore, the unchecked militarization of civilian life and state restrictions on economic activity severely hinder residents’ ability to secure basic necessities, threatening the permanent depopulation of historic coastal settlements.

3. Prolonged Media Blackout and Information Isolation

For nearly thirty years, the Red Sea Afar communities have been subjected to a strict media blackout. The Eritrean authorities have systematically restricted independent journalists, human rights monitors, and civil society organizations from operating within or reporting on the region.

This deliberate isolation has:

  • Suppressed global awareness of the grave circumstances facing coastal and island populations.
  • Obstructed independent verification of human rights violations and humanitarian needs.
  • Silenced affected residents seeking international aid and justice.

A lack of media coverage must not be mistaken for an absence of suffering. State-imposed information controls make independent verification more urgent, not less.

4. Responsibilities of the Eritrean Authorities and the International Community

RSADO holds the Eritrean government fully accountable politically, legally, and morally for state policies and restrictions that deliberately deteriorate living conditions and violate fundamental human rights. We demand that the Eritrean authorities fulfill their obligations to protect civilian lives and guarantee access to basic services.

Concurrently, RSADO calls upon the international community to move beyond passive expressions of concern and take decisive, practical measures to secure humanitarian access to affected regions. Independent international bodies must be granted entry to assess conditions on the mainland coast and islands. Continued inaction risks deepening the suffering of civilians facing hunger, thirst, disease, and forced displacement.

5. Urgent Demands

RSADO calls upon the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union regional bodies, and international human rights organizations to urgently implement the following:

  1. Independent Assessment: Conduct an immediate, independent humanitarian assessment of living conditions, health, nutrition, and protection needs across Red Sea Afar coastal areas and islands.
  2. Emergency Aid Delivery: Dispatch emergency humanitarian relief including nutritional assistance, safe drinking water, medicines, and medical supplies prioritizing children, women, the elderly, and the chronically ill.
  3. Healthcare Infrastructure Support: Support and rehabilitate local healthcare facilities through the provision of qualified medical personnel, essential medicines, diagnostic tools, and equipment.
  4. Unhindered Access: Mandate unhindered access for independent humanitarian organizations to conduct needs assessments and transparently distribute aid.
  5. Formal Investigation: Launch an independent investigation into the human rights impacts of Eritrean security and military policies, focusing on freedom of movement, food security, and livelihood destruction, ensuring full accountability for violations.
  6. Protection of Youth and Civilians: Demand an immediate end to militarization and forced conscription policies that break up families and displace youth, upholding civilian dignity above political or military objectives.
  7. Lifting the Media Blackout: End all restrictions on information gathering, allowing independent journalists and human rights observers full access to document and report on conditions.
  8. Permanent Monitoring Mechanism: Establish a regional and international monitoring framework to track humanitarian, economic, and human rights developments and publish regular independent reports.

RSADO appeals to the conscience of the international community and to every organization dedicated to preserving human life and dignity.

Save the Red Sea Afar people from a silent humanitarian catastrophe.
