In July 2003 the aftershocks of the border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea (1998 – 2000) were still being felt. The finalisation of the border continued to be contested. Eritrean president Isaias Afwerki sat down for an interview with the BBC’s Jonah Fischer a decade into his premiership. This interview comes two years after Afwerki banned the private press, and so stands as one of few long form interviews with the leader from this period. Afwerki discussed relations with Ethiopia and Somalia, obstacles the government faced executing its policies, and ambitions for the future of the country.
