Statement Issued by the Cooperation for Survival of Ethiopian Popular Forces (Cooperation for Survival)

Since Ethiopia fell under the grip of the Prosperity Party’s individualistic, dictatorial, and genocidal regime, its defining characteristics have become war, genocide, massacres, and absolute poverty. The country has become a state where law and order have collapsed; millions have been plunged into extreme poverty and displaced; hope has vanished for its citizens; various state-sponsored destructive wars are being waged; a dictatorship has been imposed; and, having descended beyond the status of a failed state, it is facing the threat of disintegration. The country has also been sidelined regionally and at the global level, pushed to the fringes on political, economic, and diplomatic issues, and has lost its sway.

Because the regime rests on a distorted narrative and an anti-people state structure, and stands in opposition to reason, truth, equality, public participation, justice, freedom, national dignity, and sovereignty, and doesn’t follow peaceful and constructive paths, it lacks both the desire and the capacity to halt the war destroying the country and its people, bring about lasting peace, guarantee citizens’ rights and freedoms, uphold the rule of law, or put an end to the people’s suffering, misery, poverty, and backwardness. This despotic and genocidal regime, in order to achieve its nefarious objectives, has acted as a mercenary for foreign powers, and, selling out the interests of the people, has made the country an emissary and dependent state.

Consequently, a historic responsibility has fallen upon us, the popular forces who care about the survival of Ethiopian people, to overthrow this regime, uphold the survival of all the nations, nationalities, and peoples, and usher in a new chapter. The historic mission and primary objective of the popular forces is to collectively defend against the grave war waged against us, topple Prosperity’s individualistic and despotic regime which has endangered our peoples’ existence, establish an inclusive transitional government guided by a transitional charter, and usher in a new transitional chapter which enables the upholding of the full human and democratic rights of all Ethiopians.

The main objectives of the transitional chapter that will be heralded following the regime’s collapse are:

  1. To rescue the survival of peoples and the nation’s security; halt all wars; uphold human and democratic rights; maintain peace and stability; calm the socio-economic crisis; improve relations with neighboring countries; and restore the nation’s regional and global standing;
  2. For the sake of the country’s peace and continued survival of peoples, address critical public and national issues through the direct participation of the people by conducting a genuine, trustworthy, and all-inclusive public and constitutional dialogue, for the sake of the country’s peace and the continued existence of its peoples.

Therefore, in order to remove the Prosperity’s despotic and genocidal regime, ensure the survival and security of our peoples, establish an inclusive transitional government, mobilize our collective organizational capacities to usher in a new democratic transitional chapter, and resolve the differences that exist among us peacefully, based on the free will of our peoples, principles, and the rule of law, we, the popular forces listed below, namely:

  1. Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM)
  2. Oromo Liberation Army (OLF-OLA)
  3. Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)
  4. Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF)
  5. Afar National Unity Revolutionary Front (Ugugumo)
  6. Benishangul People’s Liberation Movement (BPLM)
  7. Gumuz People’s Democratic Movement (GPDM)

have established a joint alliance named the “Cooperation of Ethiopian Popular Forces for Survival” (referred to in short as “Cooperation for Survival”). Having arrived at this great and decisive cooperation—which the Ethiopian people have been eagerly awaiting—after much effort and many challenges, we wish to express our immense joy and issue the following calls:

  1. To all Ethiopians, civic organizations, and political parties: We respectfully call upon Ethiopian popular forces, civic organizations, and political parties that accept the objectives and methods of this cooperation – recognizing that the regime is a force which has resolved to destroy the very existence of all Ethiopia’s peoples – to join us as partners in our struggle for survival.
  2. To the regime’s armed forces and leadership: We call upon you to recognize that the regime you serve poses an existential threat to the peoples of Ethiopia and is anti-people, anti-peace, anti-democratic, and genocidal, become partners and participants in the struggle to save your people and your country before it is too late.
  3. To neighboring countries, African nations, and the international community: We call upon you to stand with the peoples, justice, and democracy, recognizing that the genocidal regime in power is alienated from the public, lacks both the capacity and the will to establish peace and stability in Ethiopia or the Horn of Africa, and is on the verge of being ousted by the people’s struggle.
